English Writing Lab - History

- The English Writing Lab story is very simple. It all started, when I came to the United States from Sweden, as a college student, starting my college journey at the American University in Washington DC. Then in the 1990's, I struggled to write my college essay assignments for my various classes with very little know how of the American essay writing style. To get me going, my professors told me to go the university writing lab to get help. So, I did. There, I got help from amazing English teachers and tutors.
- When I could not afford the high tuition rates at the American University, I transferred to Montgomery College, and later to the University of Maryland, College Park. Along the way, I spent a lot of time in the community college and later the university writing labs getting help to write my essays ond demand for various assignments. Along the way, I have helped countless other international students, just like myself, to pursue their college dreams. It was a lot of hard work for many of us to get essays done.
- With time, this learning experience lead me to start the English Writing Lab, and now it has grown into an on-line and in-person writing lab supporting students to master the art of writing college level essays. We utilize the Zoom and Google Classroom.
- In our resource section, we also list a lot of English curriculum, reading, writing and spelling resources, Such resources inc such as Jolly Phonics, International Phonics, etc. On the vocabulary development frontier, we have utilized such comprehensive curriculum such as Townsend Press, to engage English Language Learners, from Middle School through High School, and into college to master the fine points of English grammar, and to write book reports and essays to meet the demands of grade level academic studies.
The English Dictionary Science Project
Mission
The goal of this program is to assist all students in becoming good writers, active readers, creative thinkers, and resourceful learners by providing them with their own personal dictionary. The dictionaries are a gift to each student to use at school and at home for years to come. Educators see third grade as the dividing line between learning to read and reading to learn, so we encourage our sponsors to give dictionaries each year to children in the third grade.
The English Dictionary Science Project
In 2010, Lena picked up a copy of The English Dictionary Project, in the Francis Gregory Library in Washington DC. This free copy changed the direction of her family life. The lead to her writing a curriculum focus on teaching the fundamental of good spelling and handwriting, Her curriculum, the A to Z of English Plural Rules is at the heart of all the English classes and workshops. The focus is on teaching the English noun system and the mastery of the English verbs as it connects to the other parts of speech in teaching English to children and adults.

Weekly English Grammar Classes
The English Lab offers weekly grammar classes in after school setting for students from kindergarten through high school in a face-to-face setting in public libraries. We also offer adults learners on-line classes that are held via Zoom, and support is offered via Google Classroom. We also provide introductory hands on learning of the Google Classroom on-line learning platform and Remind.com keep in class related text message services.
